POPCORN 2011 Units may now sign up to participate in the Fall, 2011 Popcorn Sale. Go to www.chicagobsa.org/popcorn to sign up to sell or return the sign-up form. Plan on attending Popcorn Training on Saturdays: August 20 (South Side location TBA) or August 27 (Wright College Auditorium, 4300 N. Narragansett) and get a sample ZYCLONE that Scouts can earn by selling $600.
SCOUT SURGE The BSA has joined with VOICES of September 11th and the Flag of Honor Project to provide an opportunity for today's Scouts to learn about the events of 9/11 that changed our history. Units are encouraged to do any of the following: Visit VOICES 9/11 Living Memorial Park, Purchase and fly a Flag of Honor, Visit memorials that Honor the Memory of 9/11 (Naperville or Springfield), or Add to the VOICES 9/11 Memorial Map. NESA CHICAGO SCOUT DAY WITH THE CHICAGO CUBS – AUGUST 8, 2011 The Chicago Cubs and the Boy Scouts have joined together to bring nearly 200 years of tradition to Wrigley Field. On August 8, 2011, the Cubs would like to offer specially priced tickets to all Boy Scouts, their families and friends. Upper Deck Box tickets regularly priced at $43 are reduced to $31, Terrace Reserved Infield tickets regularly priced at $32 are reduced to $23, and Terrace Reserved Outfield seats regularly priced at $28 are reduced to $21. $3 per ticket sold through this program will be donated back to our Council. Participants will get the chance to take part in a pre-game parade on the warning track and all participants will receive a commemorative patch following the parade. Click here for more information.
SCOUT DAY WITH THE CHICAGO FIRE
Join us for the 2nd Annual Scout Day with the Chicago Fire on Saturday, September 25th at 3pm. Scouts will have a number of special experiences that day, including a soccer skills clinic on the field prior to the game, a special tailgate area, scoreboard recognition, and much more. SCOUTING FOR FOOD – DECEMBER 2011 Hunger is a way of life for far too many in our country. It may seem ironic, but in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, millions of people each year are forced to choose between putting food on the table or paying for other necessities of life. An estimated 13 million people go to bed hungry each night. The Chicago Area Council can do its part to alleviate hunger in Chicago and America. Join the 2011 Scouting for Food team and help end hunger. CHICAGO CITY HIKE The Activities Committee is developing another great event for the Scouts of Chicago. Lace up your boots and grab your walking staff for a Chicago City Hike. Check for updates on date, time, activities, and cost, in future E-Scouters and on the council website. This is a reminder that Eagle Scout projects may not be started prior to receiving approval and signatures from your Scoutmaster, a troop committee member, and the District Advancement Chair. Once these signatures are received, it is at that time you may start working on your project. Working on a project before full approval can lead to your project being turned down.
Please make sure to take advantage of all the advancement opportunities that are made available to you by your unit over the summer. If your unit is done meeting for the summer, this is a great time to go through each Scout's records and enter their advancement records.
All Scouts need to be registered with your unit in order for any advancement records to be entered. Please make sure all advancement forms are showing the Scout's proper name. If a nickname is used, the council will not know who this is and will consider that Scout as not registered.

SALESMANSHIP MERIT BADGE WITH THE CHICAGO SKY Join the Chicago Sky Sales staff at Sky Headquarters and earn your Salesmanship Merit Badges. Certified Merit Badge counselors will be available to teach basic principles of the sales process and explain the requirements for earning the badge. Scouts who participate in this program will sell tickets to an upcoming game. For every ticket the Scouts sell through this program a portion will be donated back to their Troop. Click here to learn more. UPDATE YOUR TRAINING RECORD Did you recently receive a postcard stating you need to take training that you've already taken? If so, update your training record by visiting www.chicagobsa.org/update. Remember, if you took training online, you DO NOT need to fill out this form – just enter your BSA member id number in your MyScouting profile and it will update your record at the council office automatically.
NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING Thanks to Ray Gawne and his staff for a great course! NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well. TRAINER'S EDGE Calling all trainers, calling all trainers! Thinking about being a trainer? Place on your calendar for the next upcoming Trainer's EDGE for Saturday, August 20th, 2011. WOOD BADGE FOR THE 21st CENTURY Wood Badge is almost full!!! Sign up today before it's too late. Chicago Area Council will hold a Wood Badge Course in 2011 on August 19-21 and Sept 23-25 at Camp Betz in Berrien Springs, MI. Wood Badge for the 21st Century has been developed for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout and Venturing Leaders, as well as council and district leaders. The course content and leadership principles introduced apply to Scouters in all leadership positions and will provide a common foundation of leadership skills to be used throughout all program areas. COUNCIL AND DISTRICT TRAININGS The BSA online learning center is where you can take various online courses. All of these courses are now found through your MyScouting page at www.myscouting.org. In order for your training to be recorded, you must have entered your member ID number into the MyScouting system. NEW RENEKER RESERVATION POLICY The Camping Committee introduces a new Camp Reneker Reservation Policy for the 2012 camping season. The goal of the policy is to provide new Scout families the opportunity to stay at Reneker while their Scout or adult leader is at camp. The new policy affects all campers at Reneker. OVERNIGHTS AT USS SILVERSIDES Owasippe will no longer be scheduling overnights at USS Silversides located in Muskegon, MI. If your Troop would like to schedule an overnight on your own during your stay at camp, you are welcome to contact the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum and work with their staff. Completed campership applications were due by May 1, 2011. Camperships are based on demonstrated need and the maximum granted per Scout is one-half of the early-bird camp fee.
GET READY FOR SUMMER CAMP @ OWASIPPE As camp approaches there are a couple things you will want to do prior to heading up to camp. Two weeks before you arrive at camp, please send in the following pieces of information: · Copy of your unit roster. · Equipment planner worksheet. Please include any dietary or special needs you may have. · Online High Adventure and Outpost Worksheet. Please click here to complete the worksheet. Please mail or fax the unit roster and equipment planner up to camp or to the Scout office.

A NOTE ON NEW SCOUTS As you all know, New Scouts are always eligible for the early bird discount. There is a process involved in this. A new Scout is defined as a youth who joins Boy Scouts for the first time in the same year he is attending camp. So for example, anyone who joins a troop after January 1st this year is considered a New Scout for the 2011 summer camp season. Units who would otherwise loose the early bird discount who have new Scouts must provide a copy of the youth application to get the discount. This should be submitted with the final payment, but can be brought along to camp. Questions should be directed to Chris Townsend.

TRAINING AT OWASIPPE Owasippe is happy to provide adult leader training every week this summer at camp. Boy Scout Leaders will be able to complete all the trainings necessary to be considered trained. This includes: Youth Protection Training, This is Scouting, Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Specific Training, Troop Committee Challenge, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. PHILMONT 2012 Every Scout should have the opportunity to experience Philmont at least once. This can be that opportunity. Openings are available for the 2012 Council contingent trip which will leave Chicago on Friday, July 13, 2012 return on Saturday, July 28, 2012. You DO NOT need to find a group of people to participate in this activity. Single youth applicants may participate even if their Troop or Crew doesn't.
